Agartala, June 15: The mysterious death of a 24-year-old woman at a private medical college in Tripura has sparked political and social concerns. The state’s main opposition party, CPI(M), has called for a Special Investigation Team (SIT) inquiry into the incident.
On Sunday, Leader of the Opposition and CPI(M) state secretary Jitendra Chowdhury visited the victim’s home to meet her family. He was accompanied by several senior party leaders and the state secretary of the youth organization, Nabrun Deb.
After speaking with the family and local residents, Chowdhury asserted that the woman’s death may not have been a suicide but rather a homicide. He questioned how the police could reach a conclusion before the post-mortem report was available. He emphasized that the truth of the incident would only emerge with an SIT or judicial investigation.
Chowdhury alleged that prior to the incident, the victim’s mother had asked her to come home, but the medical college administration denied her permission for three days. He also claimed that the woman had recently been transferred to another department and was assigned to work night shifts against her will.
This private medical college is located in the Madhuban area of West Tripura and is operated by a non-governmental organization based in Birbhum, West Bengal.
The CPI(M) leader noted that the victim’s family and local residents are dissatisfied with the progress of the police investigation. He criticized the investigation officials, accusing the relevant Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of prematurely labeling the case as related to a romantic affair.
Meanwhile, the Tripura government’s Home Department ordered a magistrate’s inquiry into the case on June 11. According to an order issued by Additional Secretary Tarit Kanti Chakma, the District Magistrate and Collector of West Tripura, Dr. Vishal Kumar, has been tasked with the investigation. He is required to examine all aspects of the incident and submit a detailed report to the Home Department within 15 days.
Reports indicate that the woman was previously employed as a caretaker at the medical college and had recently been assigned to the Examination Cell. Her body was discovered on the night of June 10 within the college premises.
Following the incident, the police initiated an investigation, and the next day, the body was sent for post-mortem at Agartala Government Medical College and Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital in the presence of family members and college administration. A young man has also been arrested in connection with the case.
The victim’s family has expressed concerns about the possibility of murder and has demanded a fair, transparent, and thorough investigation. Additionally, some local residents have raised suspicions of sexual harassment prior to her death.
