Kolkata, June 1: The political landscape in West Bengal is witnessing escalating discontent and disputes within the Trinamool Congress (TMC). The party has expelled two of its MLAs, Ritobrata Banerjee and Sandipan Saha.
Ritobrata Banerjee represents the Uluberia East constituency, while Sandipan Saha is the MLA for the Entally seat. Following their expulsion, Saha raised serious questions about party leadership and organizational processes, alleging that signatures on a crucial proposal included names of individuals who were not present at the meeting. He termed this a significant irregularity and demanded a fair investigation into the matter.
Saha stated that the name of TMC’s national general secretary, Abhishek Banerjee, has emerged in this controversy because he signed the list of MLAs. According to Saha, the approved list contained numerous errors, and it was Abhishek Banerjee’s responsibility to ensure its accuracy and verification. He accused the process of lacking due diligence, which led to the current dispute.
This issue was also discussed at a recent press conference. West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari claimed that TMC MLAs Sandipan Saha and Ritobrata Banerjee had lodged a complaint before the Assembly Speaker. The complaint alleged various irregularities and procedural discrepancies in the proposal submitted by TMC concerning the election of the Leader of the Opposition.
Additionally, the state’s political climate has been heated due to other recent incidents. A reported attack on Abhishek Banerjee was followed by news of an assault on TMC leader Kalyan Banerjee just a day later. These ongoing events have intensified the political atmosphere in the state.
Observers note that the growing dissent within the party and the exchanges of accusations among leaders could pose significant challenges for the TMC. Reports suggest that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is also displeased with the situation.
