Congress Accuses BJP of Conspiracy Following Datia By-Election Announcement

New Delhi, July 2: The Election Commission has announced a by-election for the Datia assembly seat in Madhya Pradesh, scheduled for July 30. In response, the opposition party Congress has accused the BJP and the Election Commission of conspiring against its MLA, Rajendra Bharti, who has been disqualified.

Opposition leader Umang Singhhar stated that the people of Datia elected Bharti by a significant majority in the 2023 assembly elections. He urged Congress workers to begin preparations for the upcoming by-election in the state.

Singhhar remarked, “The people of Datia chose Rajendra Bharti with a large majority in 2023. His membership has been revoked under a conspiracy. The BJP is attempting to seize this seat through the by-election, but the public will once again place their trust in Congress.”

According to the commission’s schedule, nominations will be accepted from July 6 to July 13. Scrutiny will take place on July 14, and candidates can withdraw their nominations until July 16. Voting is set for July 30, with vote counting on August 3.

The by-election has become necessary due to Bharti’s disqualification under the Representation of the People Act, following a conviction in a criminal case.

Datia is one of the politically significant assembly seats in the Gwalior-Chambal region. In the 2023 assembly elections, Bharti defeated the then Home Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Narottam Mishra, by a margin of 7,742 votes, ending the long-standing dominance of the BJP in this seat.

The BJP is expected to make a strong effort to reclaim this assembly seat, with speculation that Mishra may be the party’s candidate once again. Meanwhile, Congress aims to retain this seat and further solidify its victory from the 2023 elections.

This by-election in the politically crucial Gwalior-Chambal region is viewed as a significant political contest for both parties.
