TMC Claims Majority as Opposition Leader Meets Election Commission

New Delhi, July 2: The Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Ritabrata Banerjee, announced that a delegation of ten TMC legislators met with the Election Commission. Following this meeting, Banerjee told the media, “We are the All India Trinamool Congress, and we hold a two-thirds majority.”

During the media interaction, Banerjee stated that a representative session was held in Kolkata on June 22, which led to the selection of the All India Trinamool Congress and the election of Arup Roy as the chairperson of the breakaway faction. “As soon as our special meeting concluded, we requested an appointment with the Election Commission on June 23. We asked the Commission to allow as many members as possible to meet with us, and we are grateful that the entire bench met with us. We hope the Election Commission will contact us soon,” he added.

He emphasized, “We are indeed the All India Trinamool Congress. More than two-thirds of the legislators, district council members, and councilors are with us. Therefore, there is no question of demanding the TMC’s election symbol. Whenever such a session occurs in the party, the Election Commission should be informed immediately. We appreciate that the entire bench met with us.”

Banerjee criticized the current leadership, stating that a bureaucrat has taken control of what was once a grassroots party. “It has gradually shrunk around one individual. If anyone has been involved in syndicates—be it related to sand, coal, dolomite, cattle, or any form of corruption—action should be taken against them. The public sentiment against the Trinamool Congress is essentially a verdict against corruption,” he asserted.

He clarified, “This is not just my personal opinion; we are speaking collectively. The people of Bengal do not support dynastic politics.”
