Rabri Devi Vacates Government Bungalow After Two Decades: A Political Era Ends

Patna, July 2: Former Chief Minister Rabri Devi has vacated her government bungalow after nearly 20 years, marking the end of an era in Bihar’s political landscape. The bungalow at 10 Circular Road, one of the most significant addresses in Bihar politics, is now transitioning into a new chapter.

Rabri has moved to her family residence in Kautilya Nagar alongside her husband, RJD leader and former Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav. This shift signifies the conclusion of a significant period linked to the political journey of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD).

Rabri Devi has resided in the government bungalow since February 2, 2006. It was allocated to her during her tenure as the Leader of the Opposition, first in the Bihar Assembly and later in the Legislative Council. Over the years, this bungalow became the political hub for the Lalu family, hosting numerous meetings of the Grand Alliance and shaping critical political strategies and decisions.

Consequently, 10 Circular Road has become synonymous with RJD politics in Bihar. Before handing over the bungalow, Rabri expressed concerns regarding the official inventory of government properties. She wrote to the Building Construction Department, requesting the original charge register and list prepared at the time of the housing allocation in 2006.

According to sources, the department has yet to provide the original documents. Rabri insisted that the list should be verified before formally handing over the residence to avoid any future disputes or allegations related to government property. Despite the pending matter, she vacated the bungalow on Thursday.

As the current Leader of the Opposition in the Bihar Legislative Council, Rabri Devi has been allocated a government residence at 39 Harding Road. However, the Lalu family has now shifted to their private residence in Kautilya Nagar. Meanwhile, Tejashwi Yadav, the Leader of the Opposition in the Bihar Assembly, has already moved to his official residence at 1 Polo Road.

As a result, the family’s political and personal activities will now be conducted from separate locations. The Bihar government had previously instructed Rabri Devi to vacate the bungalow within a month. This was followed by a 15-day extension and then a final seven-day notice. During this period, the family gradually moved their belongings, with trucks transporting household items out of the residence over the past few days.

The government has now allocated the bungalow at 10 Circular Road to Nand Kishore Ram, the state’s Minister of Animal and Fisheries Resources.
