BJP Legislator Files Complaint Against Durga Puja Committee for Land Encroachment

Kolkata, July 2: Ritesh Tiwari, the BJP legislator from Kashipur-Belgachia, has lodged a complaint against the Tala Pratyay Durga Utsav Committee at the Tala police station in North Kolkata. He accuses the committee of illegally occupying land at the Tala Gymkhana ground and causing damage to property owned by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC).

The Durga Puja organized by the Tala Pratyay Club is among the most popular community celebrations in the city. Tiwari’s complaint specifically targets committee officials Dhruvjyoti Basu, also known as Shubho, and his associates. The FIR was filed on July 1 at the Tala police station.

In his complaint, Tiwari claims that the Tala Pratyay Durga Utsav Committee has unlawfully occupied nearly two bighas of land at the Tala Gymkhana ground since 2018. He further alleges that a 200-foot boundary wall, a large iron gate, and a grill belonging to KMC have been demolished. According to the complaint, a clubhouse has also been constructed on a small park.

The legislator asserts that these actions fall under organized crime as defined by Section 111 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Additionally, Tiwari alleges that a fraudulent electricity connection was obtained from the Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation (CESC) under the name of the Tala Park Association. He states that the address used for the connection is actually an empty plot in KMC’s Ward No. 5, which has been allocated to a volunteer organization named Calcutta Rescue.

The complaint also mentions that a significant portion of the ground is occupied year-round by various structures and materials, leaving local children and residents with no space to play. Serious allegations have been made against the Tala Pratyay Club.
