New Delhi, June 8: The coach of the Indian U-18 women’s hockey team, Rani Rampal, has described the bronze medal won at the Asia Cup as a significant confidence booster for the team. Captain Sweety Kujur expressed joy over the bronze medal but also shared a hint of disappointment for not securing the gold.
Captain Sweety acknowledged that the team had the potential to win gold, but she believes this medal will uplift the players’ morale for the future. The Indian women’s team showcased an impressive performance throughout the tournament, winning all three of their pool stage matches and finishing first. They scored 30 goals while conceding only 2.
However, the team faced a setback in the semifinals against China. After a tightly contested match that ended 2-2, India lost 1-3 in the shootout. In the bronze medal match, the team delivered a strong performance, defeating Korea 3-0 to secure the third position in the tournament.
Discussing the team’s performance, head coach Rani Rampal stated, “This is just the beginning for these players, and they have a long journey ahead in hockey. I believe this medal and the Asia Cup tournament will boost their confidence and help them perform even better in the future.”
In the match against Korea, Sandipa Kumari scored in the 2nd minute, followed by captain Sweety Kujur in the 16th minute, and Nausheen Naz in the 33rd minute. Captain Sweety reflected on the team’s performance, saying, “We are happy, but also a bit disappointed because we did not fully achieve the goals we set for ourselves. We believed our team was capable of winning the gold medal, but we fell short due to our own mistakes.”
