New Delhi, July 24: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has extended his best wishes to the Indian team participating in the Commonwealth Games 2026. He expressed confidence that the country’s athletes will compete in Glasgow with “passion, determination, and exceptional sportsmanship.”
In a post on X, PM Modi stated, “The Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026 are starting, and I wish the Indian team all the best. I am confident that our athletes will participate with enthusiasm, strong resolve, and outstanding performance. The talent and dedication of our athletes always inspire countless Indians.”
The Commonwealth Games 2026 kicked off with a vibrant opening ceremony on Thursday, officially announced by King Charles III. This marks Glasgow’s second time hosting the Commonwealth Games, following the 2014 event.
Olympic medalists Mirabai Chanu and Lovlina Borgohain led the Indian contingent during the Parade of Nations. Mirabai, the Olympic silver medalist in weightlifting, carried the national flag, while Lovlina, who won bronze at the Tokyo Olympics, held the ceremonial Commonwealth baton.
India has sent a team of 126 athletes competing in 13 sports, including para sports, aiming to maintain its strong record at the Commonwealth Games. The country’s campaign began even before the opening ceremony, with the lawn bowls team being the first Indian athletes to take to the field. Lovlina Borgohain has already secured a medal by reaching the semifinals.
India’s medal hopes rest on several star athletes, including Neeraj Chopra in javelin, Mirabai Chanu in weightlifting, and Lovlina Borgohain in boxing. Athletes from 74 Commonwealth nations and territories will compete over 11 days in 10 sports at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
