Rome, July 24: Renowned football coach Pep Guardiola has turned down the opportunity to become the head coach of Italy’s national football team. He has decided to continue his break from football. This decision is sure to disappoint the Italian Football Federation, which had plans to appoint him after Italy missed qualifying for the FIFA World Cup for the third consecutive time.
The former Manchester City manager had discussions with Italy’s technical director, Paolo Maldini. Maldini presented a long-term vision aimed at restructuring the national men’s football team. However, after their conversation, Guardiola opted to remain away from coaching for the time being.
Before declining the offer, Guardiola carefully considered the proposal from the Italian Football Federation. He expressed his gratitude, stating, “Thank you, I feel honored, but I am not ready for this at the moment,” according to Gazetta.
At 55 years old, Guardiola also indicated that he is not prepared to return to management until he can fully meet the demands of the role. He remarked, “If I do it, I will do it 100 percent.”
This decision comes just days after reports suggested that the Italian Football Federation was willing to adjust its financial plans to appoint one of football’s most successful managers.
Senior officials from the federation, including Maldini and his advisor Leonardo, met with Guardiola in Barcelona to outline a long-term vision designed to restore Italy’s fortunes following another disappointing World Cup qualifying campaign. This proposal extended beyond simply coaching the senior men’s team and included a significant role in restructuring Italian football.
Guardiola recently concluded a decade-long tenure with Manchester City, during which he led the club to six Premier League titles, a UEFA Champions League victory, a historic treble in the 2022-23 season, and numerous domestic honors. His successes have solidified his reputation as one of the most accomplished managers in football history.
