New Delhi, June 8: Vaibhav Surya has made a remarkable entry into the Indian T20 team, thanks to his stellar performance in IPL 2026. The 15-year-old batsman has been selected for the Indian squad for the Ireland-England series and the 2026 Asian Games. However, former Indian captain Kapil Dev believes that Vaibhav still has a long way to go.
In a recent conversation, the captain who led India to its first World Cup victory stated, “Vaibhav Surya is undoubtedly a special talent, but he has a long journey ahead. There is no doubt that he has showcased his skills through impressive batting in club cricket and the IPL. However, Vaibhav needs to focus on himself, as there is much more to achieve. At this moment, we are all putting too much pressure on him.”
Kapil Dev acknowledged that the IPL plays a significant role in the selection of the Indian team. He mentioned that selectors can observe the kind of cricket each player is playing thanks to the IPL. The former captain noted that selectors now have numerous options and can make informed decisions about who fits into the team.
When asked about the selectors’ decision to replace Suryakumar Yadav with Shreyas Iyer as the new T20 captain, he refrained from giving a direct answer. He suggested that the selectors or those watching the players would provide a better response.
This year, the selectors have excluded Suryakumar, who led the Indian team to the T20 World Cup 2026 title, from the T20 setup. Alongside the captaincy, he has also lost his place in the T20 team. Suryakumar has been struggling with poor form for an extended period, which has led to this decision.
