President Murmu Meets Romanian PM, Discusses Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation

Bucharest, July 24: Indian President Droupadi Murmu and Romanian Prime Minister Ilie Bolosian held a meeting at the Victoria Palace in Bucharest on Friday. They discussed enhancing mutual relations in several key areas.

According to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs, both leaders focused on increasing cooperation in trade, investment, clean energy, connectivity, and new technologies.

Sibi George, Secretary (West) of the Ministry of External Affairs, and other officials were also present at the meeting. The President’s Secretariat posted on the social media platform X, stating, “President Droupadi Murmu had an extensive discussion with Romanian Prime Minister Ilie Bolosian on India-Romania bilateral relations.”

Earlier, President Murmu addressed the India-Romania Business Forum in Bucharest. This visit marks the first trip by an Indian President to Romania in three decades. Accompanying her are Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Nimuben Jayanthibhai Bambahaniya, MP Dinesh Sharma, and Vijay Baghel.

During her address at the Business Forum, the President noted that Romania, strategically located at a major European crossroads, has become a natural and significant partner for India due to its skilled human resources, advanced industrial capacity, and strong integration with the European Union. Romania is not only a vital location for investment but also serves as a gateway to the broader European market.

She emphasized that the participation of numerous Indian business delegations at this forum reflects the growing confidence of Indian industries in the opportunities present in Romania and their desire to establish lasting partnerships with Romanian businesses.

The President highlighted that trade and economic cooperation are fundamental to the contemporary partnership between India and the European Union. With a combined market of nearly two billion people and a joint economy of around $25 trillion, the India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) stands as one of the most significant economic partnerships globally. Its aim is to deepen trade integration, accelerate investment flows, and create robust and diverse supply chains.

She stressed the importance of the swift and effective implementation of the FTA, which will create a reliable environment for business, strengthen value chain integration, and generate new opportunities for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), startups, and innovators on both sides.
