Milan, July 24: Croatian football legend Luka Modric has decided to extend his illustrious career by signing a new contract with AC Milan. The club officially announced this development.
Modric will remain with AC Milan until June 30, 2027. Approaching his 41st birthday in September, Modric joined Milan last year after concluding a successful 13-year stint with Real Madrid. His previous contract with AC Milan expired on June 30.
In his first season, Modric played 37 matches for AC Milan, scoring two goals. However, the team’s performance fell short of expectations, finishing fifth in Serie A and reaching only the Round of 16 in the Coppa Italia. Modric had previously stated that he would decide his future after the FIFA World Cup 2026, but he has now chosen to continue his club football journey.
Croatia’s national team was eliminated in the Round of 32 after losing to Portugal in the World Cup. AC Milan’s statement highlighted Modric’s contributions, praising his experience, hard work, and skills that have strengthened the team since his arrival. He is expected to play a crucial role in the upcoming season.
Modric, who won the Ballon d’Or in 2018, will wear the number 14 jersey for AC Milan next season. He made the switch from Tottenham Hotspur to Real Madrid in 2012. Overcoming initial challenges, he etched his name in Real Madrid’s history, playing nearly 600 matches and winning around 30 major titles, including six UEFA Champions League trophies and four La Liga titles. In 2018, Modric ended the long dominance of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo by winning the Ballon d’Or, recognized for his exceptional passing, ball control, and understanding of the game, which have placed him among the world’s best players.
