Glasgow, July 24: Glasgow welcomed the Commonwealth Games 2026 with a spectacular opening ceremony on Thursday. The event kicked off at the OVO Hydro, showcasing Scotland’s rich cultural heritage alongside sporting excellence, setting the stage for 11 days of thrilling competitions.
Olympic medalists Mirabai Chanu and Lovlina Borgohain proudly led the Indian contingent during the ‘Parade of Nations.’ As the Indian flag entered the arena, the crowd erupted in cheers and applause. Mirabai, a silver medalist in weightlifting at the Tokyo Olympics, served as the flag bearer, while Lovlina, who won bronze in boxing at the same Olympics, carried the Commonwealth baton, symbolizing India’s aspirations for another successful campaign.
In line with Commonwealth tradition, King Charles III officially inaugurated the games. This marks the first return of the games to Glasgow since 2014. The ceremony celebrated Scottish identity, featuring a vibrant mix of music, dance, and storytelling. Renowned artists such as Katie Tunstell, Nathan Evans, and Saint Phoenix delivered outstanding performances.
India has sent a delegation of 125 members to compete in 13 sports, including para sports. Compared to previous editions, this year’s games have a more limited scope. With several Olympic and world medalists in their ranks, the Indian team arrived in Glasgow with hopes of maintaining their status as a powerhouse in Commonwealth sports.
Interestingly, India’s campaign began even before the opening ceremony. The country’s lawn bowls team was the first to take the field, aiming to replicate their success from Birmingham 2022, where this sport earned India one of its most memorable victories in Commonwealth history.
In the 23rd edition of the games in Glasgow, athletes from 74 Commonwealth countries and territories will compete across 10 sports, utilizing famous venues such as the Scottish Event Campus, Scotstoun Stadium, Tollcross International Swimming Centre, and Glasgow Arena. Although this edition is smaller in scale than previous ones, organizers are confident that the level of competition will remain high.
All eyes will be on India’s star athletes. Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra will be a highlight in athletics, while Mirabai Chanu and Lovlina Borgohain are strong contenders in weightlifting and boxing, respectively. A robust boxing team further enhances India’s medal prospects as the country aims to add another glorious chapter to its rich Commonwealth Games history. With the torch lit, flags raised, and celebrations concluding, Glasgow is now ready to shift its focus to the competitions ahead, where medals, records, and unforgettable moments await.
