Lucknow, February 10: Finance Minister Suresh Khanna presented the Uttar Pradesh government’s Economic Survey Report for the year 2025-26 during the assembly budget session on Monday. He emphasized the government’s commitment to strengthening healthcare facilities and expanding medical infrastructure.
Khanna noted that the impact of planned efforts to enhance the accessibility, quality, and capacity of health services is becoming increasingly evident at the grassroots level. The historic increase in the number of government and private medical colleges, along with improved access to medical services in rural areas and the introduction of technology-based telemedicine services, are prime examples of this progress.
The Finance Minister revealed that until 2017, there were only 36 operational medical colleges in the state, comprising 15 government and 21 private institutions. In recent years, the state government has prioritized the expansion of medical education and health services, leading to the establishment of several new medical colleges. By the end of 2025, the total number of medical colleges in the state is expected to rise to 81, including 45 government and 36 private colleges. This continuous growth in medical colleges not only enhances the availability of health services across various regions but also provides opportunities for a large number of new doctors to receive medical education, strengthening the state’s healthcare system for the future.
To ensure uniformity in medical and dental education curricula and examinations, the Atal Bihari Vajpayee State Medical University has been established. Additionally, to bring healthcare services to the doorsteps of people living in rural and remote areas, the state government has launched a mobile medical unit service.
Currently, 170 mobile medical units are operational across 54 districts in the state. These units have treated a total of 20.5 million patients so far, proving especially beneficial for those who face challenges in reaching hospitals from distant areas. The state has also expanded telemedicine services, promoting the use of modern technology. Following the guidelines of the Government of India, e-Sanjeevani teleconsultation services were initiated on May 11, 2021. Presently, this service operates in 26 medical colleges in the state, providing over 2,253,320 outpatient consultations, allowing patients to consult specialists from the comfort of their homes.
