Jaipur, June 16: The Rajasthan government has initiated a statewide campaign called ‘Stop Diarrhea’ starting June 16, aimed at protecting children from this serious illness. Health Minister Gajendra Singh announced that the campaign will run until July 31. During this period, packets of Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) and zinc tablets will be provided to children to reduce the risks of dehydration and related complications.
In an interview with a news agency, the health minister highlighted that cases of diarrhea tend to rise during the summer and monsoon seasons due to contaminated water and unsanitary food practices, which can carry various viruses and diseases. He emphasized the importance of instilling hygiene habits in children and ensuring they have access to clean food. Singh also pointed out that open defecation significantly contributes to the spread of infections, underscoring the need for improved sanitation. This campaign is crucial for our children, especially as the risk of diarrhea increases during the heat of May and June and the monsoon season. ORS and zinc medications can be life-saving for children.
Gajendra Singh explained that during the campaign, ASHA workers, nurses, Anganwadi centers, and health sub-centers will distribute two packets of ORS and approximately 15 days’ worth of zinc tablets to children. Parents will also be educated on the proper use of ORS in case of diarrhea. He noted that the mortality rate among children affected by diarrhea in Rajasthan has decreased from 6.1% to 5.8%, while the national average is around 8%. The campaign is reportedly running successfully and yielding positive results.
The health minister also addressed recent maternal mortality cases in Kota and Bikaner. He stated that the government will seriously consider the report from the expert committee formed to investigate these cases and will take appropriate action based on the findings. He mentioned that several critical indicators were identified during the investigation, and multiple factors could be responsible for the deaths. Senior medical professionals have been called in to study all medical reports, data, and facts to draw conclusions. The death of any patient is a serious matter, and final conclusions will be based on expert opinions and scientific studies, which will then be communicated to the public.
In response to questions about Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s proposed visit to Kota, Gajendra Singh criticized the opposition, claiming they lack substantial issues and are attempting to politicize minor matters. He acknowledged that everyone has the right to express their views in a democracy, but asserted that Congress has no significant issues left, leading them to exploit such topics politically.
