
Srinagar, June 15: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah inaugurated a free breast cancer screening program for women in Srinagar on Monday. This initiative aims to enhance awareness and early detection of breast cancer among women.
According to officials, the program was launched at the Civil Secretariat with support from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and India Turns Pink (ITP) under corporate social responsibility (CSR).
The initiative will provide free breast cancer screenings, counseling, and awareness services to women in selected villages throughout the Srinagar district.
During the event, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah praised the efforts of the Airports Authority of India and the implementing organization, emphasizing the importance of such initiatives for women’s health. He noted that early detection and timely treatment of breast cancer can significantly reduce mortality rates and save many lives.
The program will cover ten villages in the Srinagar district and is expected to benefit approximately 10,000 women with free screenings, awareness, and counseling services. It aims to increase awareness of regular health check-ups and preventive health services among women.
Present at the event were Health and Medical Education Minister Sakina Ittoo, Chief Minister‘s advisor Nasir Aslam Wani, founder president of India Turns Pink P.A. Anandakumar, representatives from the organization, and other officials.
It is noteworthy that breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in India. Approximately 200,000 new cases are reported each year, leading to over 98,000 deaths due to this disease. Estimates suggest that one in every 28 women in India may be affected by breast cancer in their lifetime. Experts indicate that late detection contributes to the highest breast cancer mortality rate in the world, while timely screening and treatment can significantly mitigate this risk.
