New Delhi, June 14: For many, starting the day with a cup of tea is a cherished routine. Some cannot imagine their mornings without it. However, health experts warn that drinking tea on an empty stomach can lead to various digestive problems. A simple remedy can help alleviate these issues.
The National Health Mission (NHM) has advised people to be mindful of this habit. They recommend drinking a glass of water first thing in the morning, before consuming tea.
According to the NHM, drinking tea on an empty stomach can increase acid levels in the stomach, leading to acidity and gas issues. Additionally, this habit can cause irritation and discomfort in the stomach. Many individuals may experience heaviness, sour burps, or unease in their stomachs due to this practice.
Experts explain that the body goes several hours without water during sleep. Therefore, drinking water upon waking helps hydrate the body. It activates the digestive system and prepares the stomach for the day’s meals. Following this with tea significantly reduces the likelihood of adverse effects.
The NHM also notes that consuming tea on an empty stomach can impact energy levels throughout the day. The initial freshness from tea can sometimes lead to fatigue or sluggishness later. In contrast, if a person drinks water first or has a light nutritious snack, the body receives better energy, and the digestive process remains smooth.
Health experts recommend drinking a glass of normal or lukewarm water after waking up. Following this, having fruits, nuts, or a light nutritious breakfast before tea can help maintain a healthy stomach and prevent common digestive issues.
