
Thiruvananthapuram, June 14: Kerala has not reported any new cases of the Nipah virus. Health Minister K. Muraleedharan announced that 11 tests have returned negative. Currently, there are 100 individuals on the contact list, including 44 healthcare workers. Out of 30 tests conducted so far, 29 have been negative, with only one patient testing positive.
According to the Health Minister, there have been 135 reported cases of Shigella in Kerala since January 1. Kozhikode has recorded the highest number, with 68 cases. So far, three deaths have occurred, the first in March, followed by a child in Kozhikode and a 59-year-old woman.
Four children are in the ICU, two of whom are in critical condition, but efforts to save them are ongoing. Authorities have instructed inspections of school wells.
Amid the Nipah virus threat, an outbreak of Shigella bacteria continues in Wayanad, with new cases emerging from other districts. To combat these threats, officials have intensified surveillance and preventive measures across the state.
Health Minister K. Muraleedharan stated on Friday that the situation is under control, and there is no need for panic as officials are closely monitoring the conditions. Following a new suspected case of Nipah, the central government has begun to closely observe the situation in the state.
The Union Health Ministry has indicated that it is monitoring activities in the state and providing all necessary assistance to prevent the spread of infection.
Samples from suspected patients and their contacts have been sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune for detailed examination on an emergency basis.
Officials noted that clear information regarding the severity of the infection and the virus’s source will only be available after the official test results are released. Efforts are being made to expedite the reporting process.
The central government has instructed the state to strictly adhere to established protocols and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for Nipah prevention. The Union Health Ministry is in continuous contact with the Kerala Health Department to review preventive measures and has assured technical assistance and expert support if needed.
People are advised to remain calm and follow the health department’s guidelines.
