Uganda Announces Team for 2026 World Athletics Relays

Kampala, April 14: Uganda Athletics has officially announced its final team for the 2026 World Athletics Relays, set to take place in Gaborone, Botswana. The competition will feature four athletes representing the nation. This tournament, scheduled for May 2-3, marks the 8th edition of the World Athletics Relays and will be the first time it is held on African soil.

Dominic Otuchet, President of the Uganda Athletics Federation, informed Xinhua on Tuesday, “We received approval from the global body based on our rankings, but due to financial constraints, we can only send four runners without any reserves.”

Despite the limited team size, Otuchet emphasized that preparations are already underway. He stated, “I want to commend the athletes and coaches for their relentless hard work and dedication.”

The Ugandan team includes Haron Adoli, Kenneth Omuka, Shida Leni, and Maureen Banura. They are expected to face tough competition from elite relay teams from South Africa, the United States, Canada, Botswana, the United Kingdom, Jamaica, Spain, and Kenya.

The World Athletics Relays will be particularly significant for Botswana, as it will be the first time the country hosts a World Athletics Series event. The capital city previously hosted the Continental Tour Gold Meet in 2023 and will also hold the Botswana Golden Grand Prix on April 12, 2024.

Additionally, the 2026 World Athletics Relays will serve as a qualifying event for the World Athletics Ultimate Championship 2026 in Budapest and the World Athletics Championship 2027 in Beijing. The top six teams in the mixed 4×100 meters and 4×400 meters relays will qualify directly for Budapest, while the top twelve teams in each event will secure spots for the World Championship in Beijing.
