New Delhi, April 14: In a friendly match held at the Matsesta Football Center in Sochi, India’s U-17 women’s football team suffered a 3-0 defeat against Russia. This match was the second in a three-match series, following India’s earlier loss of 4-0 in the first encounter.
From the outset, the Russian team displayed a more aggressive approach. In the early minutes, they attempted to score, but Indian goalkeeper Munni made a commendable save. However, in the 18th minute, Russia’s Sofia Svyatnaya scored from a free-kick, giving her team a 1-0 lead. Sofia’s shot from the left was one that Munni should have easily caught, but she misjudged the ball’s speed, allowing it to slip past her and cross the goal line.
Trailing 1-0, the Indian team improved their performance and launched several strong attacks. Valina Fernandes and Olivia Chanu created some opportunities for India, but the Russian goalkeeper made excellent saves. Despite coming close to equalizing in the first half, India could not find the net, and Russia maintained their 1-0 lead.
The second half began poorly for India. In the 49th minute, a defensive error allowed Russia another scoring opportunity, which Valeriya Menayilova converted easily. Just minutes later, in the 52nd minute, Menayilova scored again, extending Russia’s lead to 3-0.
Despite being three goals down, the Indian team fought hard to make a comeback, maintaining constant pressure. In the 70th minute, Pearl Fernandes attempted to score, but Russian goalkeeper Emilianoova made a spectacular save, denying India a goal.
Throughout the match, the Indian team created several chances but failed to capitalize due to mistakes and poor finishing at crucial moments. Meanwhile, Russia took full advantage of their opportunities, securing a convincing 3-0 victory. The final match of the series is scheduled for April 17, which is considered crucial for preparations for the AFC U-17 Women’s Asian Cup 2026.
