New Delhi, April 15: United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed deep concern over the current situation in the Middle East. He emphasized that there is no military solution to the crisis and called for the resumption of peace talks.
Guterres urged all parties to respect international navigation rights and freedoms, including those concerning the Strait of Hormuz.
In a post on the social media platform ‘X’, Guterres stated, “There is no military solution to the crisis in the Middle East. Serious dialogue must resume. A ceasefire should be maintained and extended if necessary. All parties must respect international navigation rights and freedoms.”
Earlier, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric noted that significant differences exist between the United States and Iran, making an immediate agreement unlikely. He stressed the importance of continuing dialogue to gradually find a resolution. Dujarric also highlighted that the ongoing devastation and tension have made it clear that there is no military resolution to this conflict.
He pointed out that disruptions in maritime trade through the Strait are impacting the global economy and increasing insecurity in various regions.
Furthermore, he mentioned that interruptions in the supply of fertilizers and their raw materials have exacerbated food security crises for millions of vulnerable people worldwide. Additionally, obstacles in fuel, transportation, and supply chains are continuously driving up the cost of living.
Countries are actively engaged in peace efforts. South Korea has expressed its intention to participate in a multilateral meeting led by France and the UK aimed at stabilizing peace and the Strait of Hormuz.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the upcoming virtual meeting concerning the situation in the Strait is considered the next phase following a meeting of ministers from over 40 countries led by the United Kingdom earlier this month. That meeting addressed the critical maritime chokepoint where thousands of ships and their crews are stranded.
South Korea’s Deputy Foreign Minister Chung Eui-hwa will participate in this online meeting, which will be co-chaired by the United Kingdom and France.
