Alcaraz Begins Barcelona Open with a Strong Victory; Musetti and De Minaur Advance

Barcelona, April 14: World number two Carlos Alcaraz has made a powerful start at the Barcelona Open. In the second round of the ATP 500 event held on Tuesday, he defeated Finland’s Otto Virtanen with a score of 6-4, 6-3.

After finishing as the runner-up at the Monte-Carlo Masters, where he lost to Jannik Sinner, Alcaraz returned to the court looking comfortable in his first match of the season on home soil. The Spanish player now has the opportunity to reclaim the top spot by winning the title in Barcelona.

Despite taking a medical break due to discomfort in his hand at the end of the first set, Alcaraz showed no signs of trouble afterward, wrapping up the match in just one hour and 25 minutes.

In the next round, he will face Tomas Machak, who defeated Sebastian Baez 2-6, 6-4, 6-1. ATP quoted Alcaraz saying, “It feels great to return and secure another win in front of my home crowd in Barcelona. I had my first practice session here on Tuesday morning to adapt to the conditions. The conditions in Monte-Carlo were different, but overall, I’m very happy with how I played.”

The 22-year-old has enjoyed considerable success in this tournament, having won titles in both 2022 and 2023. Last year, he reached the finals but finished as the runner-up after losing to Holger Rune. Alcaraz aims to secure his third title of the season in Barcelona, having already won the Australian Open and an ATP 500 event in Doha.

His recent loss to Sinner at the Monte-Carlo Masters has further motivated him, and he is eager to get back on the winning track. This week, Sinner is not participating in the tournament, providing Alcaraz with a golden opportunity to reclaim the world number one ranking.

Meanwhile, second-seeded Lorenzo Musetti advanced to the next round by defeating Spain’s wild card player Martin Landaluce 7-5, 6-2. After a tough first set, Musetti took control from the baseline and secured victory in 88 minutes, setting up a match against Corentin Moutet.

Third-seeded Alex De Minaur also progressed to the next round, overcoming Austrian qualifier Sebastian Ofner 7-6(7), 6-4. De Minaur displayed remarkable tenacity in the first set, saving a set point in the tiebreak before winning the match in straight sets. He will face Hamad Medjedovic in the second round.
