Two Arrested for Illegal Use of Domestic LPG Cylinders in Mumbai Hotel

Mumbai, March 30: In a significant crackdown, police have arrested two individuals for illegally storing and using domestic LPG cylinders in a hotel located in the Kalbadevi area of Mumbai. The LT Marg police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the hotel owner and manager.

Based on information received, a rationing officer conducted a raid at the Lakshmi Vilas Hindu Hotel. During the inspection, it was discovered that domestic LPG cylinders were being kept for commercial use without any valid license or permission. One empty cylinder was seized, while a filled cylinder had already been confiscated and submitted to the police station.

The investigation revealed that the hotel manager, Prakash Hansaram Purohit (28), could not provide any valid documentation or permits for the cylinders. The hotel owner, Harish Mehta, has also been implicated in the case. Both individuals face charges under the Prevention of Corruption Act and the Essential Commodities Act.

Police have taken Harish Mehta and Prakash Purohit into custody and are now proceeding with further legal actions.

According to police officials, a thorough investigation is underway to determine how long the illegal use of the cylinders has been occurring and who else may be involved. Authorities have begun questioning local shopkeepers and hotel staff as part of the inquiry.

It is noteworthy that due to the ongoing tensions in Middle Eastern countries, there has been an increase in the black market for LPG cylinders in India. Many individuals are selling cylinders at inflated prices. Additionally, there has been a significant rise in the prices of commercial cylinders, prompting some hotels to resort to using domestic cylinders, which is against regulations. Consequently, there is heightened scrutiny on LPG safety and regulation in Mumbai.
