Gandhinagar, April 10: The by-election for the Umreth assembly seat in Gujarat is set to witness a contest among six candidates. Election officials have released the final list of candidates following the deadline for withdrawal of nominations.
According to officials, after the deadline on April 9, a total of six candidates remain in the race. They include Bhrujaraj Singh Chauhan from Congress, Harshad Parmar from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Maulik Shah from the Indian National People’s Party, and three independent candidates: Jitesh Kumar Sewak, Nirupa Madhu, and Mahendra Parmar.
Election officials confirmed that all valid nominations have been retained, and candidates have been allocated their election symbols as per the commission’s guidelines.
Voting for this assembly seat, located in Anand district, will take place on April 23, with the counting of votes scheduled for May 4.
The by-election notification was issued on March 30. Nominations were filed by April 6, scrutinized on April 7, and the final date for withdrawal was April 9.
The Umreth seat is one of the 182 seats in the state assembly and is part of the Anand Lok Sabha constituency. This by-election became necessary following the death of BJP MLA Govind Parmar, who previously represented the seat.
Voting will be conducted using electronic voting machines (EVMs), and the district administration is making preparations to ensure a smooth electoral process.
Traditionally, the BJP and Congress have been the main competitors in this region, although electoral trends have occasionally shifted.
With the announcement of the by-election, the model code of conduct is now in effect, and the election commission is taking necessary steps to ensure fair and peaceful voting.
