Kolkata, June 26: TMC leader Madan Mitra has openly criticized the Anti-Social Bill being introduced by the West Bengal government. In an interview on Friday, he stated that the current government is inspired by Indira Gandhi. He believes that this bill is modeled after actions taken during Congress’s rule, particularly during the Emergency period.
Mitra pointed out that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is currently emulating Congress’s tactics. He recalled that during the Emergency, many individuals, including Jyoti Basu and other CPM leaders, were arrested under similar legislation. The new bill allows for the detention of any individual for up to one year without any hearing, which he claims is the main objective of the government.
He expressed concern that those who were once considered thugs are now defining what constitutes thuggery, raising questions about the state’s governance.
Additionally, Mitra shared his views on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). He mentioned that the UCC bill has not yet been presented, so he refrained from making any comments. He stated that he would only provide input once the bill is officially introduced.
Mitra emphasized that he has not personally reviewed the UCC bill. He believes it has been introduced purely out of political revenge, which should not be tolerated. He warned that the bill aims to suppress anyone who speaks against the government.
