Mumbai, August 28: In East Medinipur, just a day before Raksha Bandhan, local shopkeepers reported a surge in demand for rakhis featuring Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. This increase follows the recent victory of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state assembly elections.
Shopkeeper Bijan Sahu noted that while overall rakhi sales have not met expectations due to sudden floods in Nepal and other factors, the demand for rakhis associated with prominent BJP leaders has significantly risen.
Sahu mentioned that these rakhis are affordably priced, ranging from 10 to 20 rupees. He stated, “Following the BJP’s victory in the state, there has been a noticeable spike in the demand for rakhis linked to party leaders.”
Another shopkeeper, Milan Debnath, echoed this sentiment, highlighting that since the formation of the government led by Suvendu Adhikari, customers have shown a preference for saffron-themed rakhis.
These unique rakhis have become a focal point in the markets of Kanthi and East Medinipur district. The shifting political landscape has directly influenced how this joyous festival is celebrated by the public.
At shops located near the Kanthi Post Office crossing, close to Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari’s residence, political-themed rakhis are neatly arranged, easily capturing the attention of buyers. People are gathering to view and, in many cases, purchase these colorful and diverse rakhis.
Shopkeepers reported strong sales figures. Residents from the city, as well as buyers from nearby villages and blocks, are enthusiastically purchasing these rakhis, especially those featuring the image of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.
