Bhopal, August 28: The Veterans Wing of the Madhya Pradesh Congress has strongly condemned the controversial remarks made by Tribal Affairs Minister Vijay Shah regarding Colonel Sofia Quraishi, an officer in the Indian Army. They are demanding his immediate removal from the cabinet and strict legal action against him.
During a press conference, the wing stated that the remarks not only insult a serving military officer but also disrespect the honor of the Indian Army and its soldiers. They urged both the central and state governments to take decisive action against the minister.
Major General (Retired) Shyam Srivastava, president of the wing, expressed that Shah’s statement has sparked widespread outrage across the country, with various groups voicing their protests. At a time when the nation is celebrating the valor of the Indian Army during ‘Operation Sindoor’, such comments are deemed extremely unfortunate and condemnable.
He noted that the Madhya Pradesh High Court had taken cognizance of the matter and ordered the filing of an FIR against Shah. Despite the FIR and subsequent directives from the Supreme Court for investigation and necessary action, the follow-up has been unsatisfactory, leading to public disappointment.
The anger intensified after a recent cabinet meeting in Madhya Pradesh where it was alleged that no prosecution approval was granted against Shah, indicating political support for him.
The wing expressed strong discontent over the decision to retain the minister in the cabinet, stating that it sends a wrong message regarding a sensitive issue related to the armed forces.
They emphasized, “The Indian Army belongs to the entire nation, not any political party. Any derogatory comment against a military officer or soldier disrespects the sentiments of millions of citizens and the sacrifices of our soldiers. The respect for the army and its officers should transcend politics.”
They have called for a fair investigation and appropriate action as per the law. Additionally, they warned that if timely action is not taken to uphold the dignity of the Indian Army and the respect of veterans, they may resort to peaceful protests on the streets.
