New Delhi, August 28: Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed on Thursday in New Delhi. They engaged in extensive discussions on various global issues, including sustainable development, renewable energy, climate change, and food security.
Jaishankar expressed his pleasure about the meeting on social media platform X, stating, “It was a pleasure to meet UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed today in New Delhi. We had comprehensive discussions on various topics, including sustainable development, renewable energy, climate change, and food security.”
Earlier on Thursday, Secretary (West) of the Ministry of External Affairs, Sibi George, also met with Amina Mohammed. Their discussions covered topics such as India-UN cooperation, achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the transformative impact of artificial intelligence (AI), peacekeeping missions, climate change, disaster risk reduction, and reforms within the UN.
Amina Mohammed arrived in India for a three-day official visit on Wednesday. Prior to her visit, UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric mentioned that she would meet with senior officials of the Indian government to discuss cooperation between India and the UN, as well as India’s role in advancing the SDGs.
During her visit, she is also expected to meet students at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) to discuss opportunities and challenges related to digital innovation in support of the Sustainable Development Goals.
Notably, earlier this month, Minister Jaishankar had discussions with permanent representatives from 17 countries who were visiting India for a study tour. He emphasized the need for reformed multilateralism that reflects the aspirations of the Global South in the changing global landscape.
Additionally, in July, Jaishankar initiated India’s campaign for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council (UNSC) for the 2028-29 term in New York, presenting India’s vision for a more representative, effective, and future-oriented global order.
