Karnataka Declares 101 Taluks Drought-Affected Due to Rain Deficit

Bengaluru, August 28: The Karnataka government has declared 101 taluks across the state as drought-affected due to a significant lack of rainfall. This decision was made on Thursday, reflecting the government’s concern for the hardships faced by farmers. Officials have been instructed to initiate relief measures on a priority basis.

According to a government statement, from June 1 to August 21, 2026, 29 districts recorded a rainfall deficit, with only two districts experiencing normal rainfall. At the taluk level, 176 taluks have been classified as areas with low rainfall, while 15 taluks have seen a severe lack of rain. During this period, only 49 taluks received above-normal rainfall.

In light of the current situation, the government has declared 101 taluks as drought-affected based on scientific assessments and established guidelines. Among these, 89 taluks are classified as severely affected, while 12 are moderately affected.

This drought declaration will take immediate effect and will remain valid for six months from the date of the government order, unless revoked earlier.

District commissioners have been directed to implement relief measures under the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) guidelines to provide immediate assistance to farmers. They have also been instructed to conduct a joint crop loss survey on a priority basis and submit reports promptly. This will help the government assess the extent of the damage and take appropriate action.

The government has stated that it will closely monitor rainfall forecasts and crop conditions across the state. A review of the situation will occur weekly, and if necessary, additional taluks may be declared drought-affected in the coming days.

The government expressed serious concern over the uncertainty faced by farmers due to insufficient rainfall and assured the farming community that it would provide necessary support during this challenging time.

Assuring farmers, Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar stated that the government stands firmly with them and will take every possible measure to alleviate their difficulties. He emphasized that there is no need for anyone to be worried, as the government is committed to supporting them through this tough period.
