Telangana Chief Minister Compares Voting Rights Struggle to Freedom Movement

Hyderabad, October 12 (Daily Kiran) : Telangana Chief Minister K. Revant Reddy stated on Monday that the ongoing fight to protect citizens’ voting rights is akin to another freedom movement. Reflecting on the struggle against British colonial rule, he emphasized that a similar situation has arisen today, necessitating a fight to safeguard the voting rights granted by the Constitution.

Speaking at a meeting organized under the ‘Save Vote… Save Country’ campaign at the Telangana Bhavan in Delhi, Reddy drew parallels to the ‘Simon Go Back’ movement from the freedom struggle. He called for a united effort to protect voting rights, echoing slogans like ‘Gyanesh Go Back’ and ‘SIR Go Back’.

According to a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office, Reddy highlighted that the battle against ‘vote theft‘ is being led by Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge, Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, and leaders from the INDIA coalition.

He accused the Modi government of conspiring to remove voters’ names under the guise of revising the electoral rolls, in collusion with Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Reddy pointed out that the Constitution, crafted by B.R. Ambedkar post-independence, empowered citizens with the right to vote. This right played a crucial role in dismantling monarchies and hereditary governance, transferring power to the people.

The Chief Minister noted that a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls had been conducted previously. He recalled that during Jawaharlal Nehru’s tenure as Prime Minister in 1950, SIR was used to grant voting rights to those who had been disenfranchised. Citizens were asked to provide details about their relocation after the partition of India.
