Thiruvananthapuram, October 12 (Daily Kiran) : Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan is working to reshape governance in Kerala, focusing on welfare initiatives and improving accessibility to government services. This effort comes four months after the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) returned to power following a decade of Left Democratic Front (LDF) rule.
Since taking office on May 18, Satheesan has outlined twelve key areas under the banner “Government with the People – Transformation of Kerala.” His administration prioritizes issues that directly impact citizens’ lives, including welfare pensions, free travel for women on KSRTC buses, healthcare, timely payments to farmers, job creation, and the swift delivery of public services.
Addressing long-standing payment delays is a central focus of the government’s agenda. The Chief Minister emphasized the settlement of dues owed to rice farmers. Additionally, allocations include ₹310 crore for pending scholarships for backward class students and ₹200 crore to cover old debts in the health department. An extra ₹32 crore has been approved for outstanding welfare pensions for migrant workers.
These measures aim to resolve grievances that have persisted for years. However, the government must ensure that all dues are cleared and that no new debts accumulate.
Particular attention is being paid to women’s welfare. Initiatives include free bus travel, interest-free loans, support for female fish vendors, and increased salaries for ASHA workers. A health insurance scheme providing coverage of up to ₹25 lakh is another significant announcement, though its success will hinge on effective implementation and funding availability.
The government is also striving to enhance Kerala’s investment climate. Efforts to simplify approval processes, develop new industrial zones, and improve facilities at the Vizhinjam port aim to stimulate economic growth and create jobs.
Youth initiatives will focus on artificial intelligence, robotics, emerging careers, and enhanced sports facilities. The government has also highlighted plans to streamline land services, combat substance abuse and corruption, and mitigate the risks posed by wildlife attacks.
