Chennai, August 20: The Tamil Nadu Assembly will hold discussions on Thursday regarding the grant demands from the Food and Consumer Protection and Cooperation Departments. This debate is part of a series of departmental discussions that highlight the new government’s priorities.
During the discussion, members from both the ruling party and the opposition will raise questions about the functioning of these departments. Food and Consumer Protection Minister Venkataramanan and Cooperation Minister Gandhiraj will respond to the issues raised by the legislators and announce new initiatives.
The debate is expected to focus on the public distribution system, availability of essential goods, consumer grievance redressal mechanisms, the functioning of fair price shops, and measures to control prices.
Members may also address issues related to cooperative banks, credit societies, crop loans, and financial assistance for farmers and vulnerable groups.
Previously, several significant departmental grant demands have been discussed in the assembly session. Reviews have been conducted for the Health and Family Welfare, Revenue and Disaster Management, Water Resources, Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, and Tourism and Culture Departments. Ministers have also responded to demands related to their respective assembly constituencies.
During Wednesday’s proceedings, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay intervened when a heated debate occurred between DMK legislator I. Periyasamy and Rural Development Minister N. Anand.
The government has stated that the distribution of development funds will be fair and that projects will be implemented without any political bias.
Since taking office in May, the Vijay government has initiated several welfare measures. The revised budget proposes additional revenue generation, modernization of schools, and an extension of the Chief Minister’s breakfast scheme for students in grades 6 to 8. The annual health insurance coverage for eligible families has also been increased from ₹5 lakh to ₹25 lakh.
The government has also provided relief for cooperative loan borrowers, with full waivers for eligible loans up to ₹75,000 and additional discounts on loans between ₹75,000 and ₹1 lakh.
Investment commitments received during the investor conference, rural development expenditures, anti-drug campaigns, and skill training programs for students and youth have also been prioritized by the government.
However, opposition members are questioning the government regarding its finances, tender processes, and the pace of project implementation. Therefore, Thursday’s debate will serve as another test of the government’s ability to effectively address its welfare claims and the concerns of consumers, farmers, and cooperative institutions.
