Chennai, August 20: The DMK has launched a scathing attack on the Tamil Nadu government following Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s announcement to provide all legislators with government-funded vehicles and other perks. DMK spokesperson TKS Elangovan stated on Thursday that the government is misleading the public.
The Tamil Nadu government has declared that each MLA will receive a monthly allowance of ₹75,000, which includes expenses for fuel and drivers. Additionally, MLAs will be allocated ₹25,000 per month to hire personal assistants for constituency work.
In a conversation, Elangovan questioned the source of funding for this initiative. He accused the government of making the same promises it previously criticized the DMK for.
He remarked, “I don’t know where the money is coming from. They are providing vehicles to MLAs and funding their expenses. Now they are increasing these benefits while claiming the DMK government was ineffective. They have taken on so much debt and left the treasury empty. There is a difference between what they say and what they do. They are deceiving the people of Tamil Nadu.”
Elangovan also responded to the state government’s decision to withdraw orders that restricted protests by students and youth, alleging that this move was likely orchestrated by the central government.
He stated, “Perhaps Delhi instructed them. They are slaves to Delhi. Delhi must have told them not to allow this, as they did not permit the cockroach party to contest in Delhi. They want to do the same in Tamil Nadu.”
Regarding the Karnataka Mekedatu dam project, which plans to cut down nearly 900,000 trees, Elangovan emphasized that the matter will be resolved through legal and tribunal processes.
He said, “It is up to the tribunal to decide. We have approached the tribunal, and orders have been issued. The Supreme Court has directed the tribunal. They must release water. They will also need permission for Mekedatu. They cannot proceed without the Tamil Nadu government’s consent. Let’s see what happens.”
Elangovan expressed concern over the central government’s proposed ‘One Day, One University’ program, stating, “They are devising a dangerous plan for the youth.”
He also criticized the inclusion of RSS-affiliated individuals in the committee responsible for preparing NCERT’s new political science textbook. He accused the RSS and BJP of wanting to change everything and disregarding scientific principles.
On the ongoing controversy surrounding “Vande Mataram,” Elangovan stated that the issue was settled during the independence movement. It was agreed that only the leaders who fought for freedom would sing two verses, while those who supported the British are now making accusations.
Regarding Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s chairing of the Southern Regional Council meeting in Tamil Nadu, he described it as a routine procedure and stated, “Let’s see what happens after the meeting. If something good comes for Tamil Nadu, we will welcome it.”
