Rain Forecast in Tamil Nadus Western Ghats, Thunderstorms Expected in Chennai

Chennai, August 20: The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has predicted rain in some parts of Tamil Nadu over the next few days due to a weak low-pressure system in the lower atmosphere along the coast.

According to the weather department, moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning is likely in one or two locations in the Western Ghats starting Thursday.

During these rain events, strong surface winds may also occur. Following this, lighter and sporadic rain is expected. From August 21 to 25, light rain is anticipated in one or two areas of the Western Ghats and the coastal districts of northern Tamil Nadu.

Most other parts of the state are expected to remain dry, although isolated local showers cannot be ruled out. The weak atmospheric system present along the Tamil Nadu coast is influencing moisture circulation and cloud formation.

In Chennai, the sky is expected to be partly cloudy on Thursday. Light rain with thunder and lightning may occur in the city and surrounding areas during the evening or night.

Forecasts indicate that rainfall may vary from one location to another, with brief showers possible in some isolated areas. While moderate rain is expected in the Western Ghats on Thursday, the forecast for the next five days suggests sporadic light rain primarily in designated western and northern coastal districts.

Meanwhile, as of 8:30 AM on Wednesday, rainfall data from the past 24 hours indicated that the highest rainfall of six centimeters was recorded in Devala of the Nilgiris district and Yercaud in Salem district. According to the weather department, five centimeters of rain was recorded in Mangalur of Cuddalore district during the same period.

These figures reflect the sporadic distribution of rainfall, with higher amounts recorded in hilly and interior areas, as well as some parts of the northern coastal region. The RMC stated that it will continue to monitor atmospheric conditions and will issue updated forecasts should there be any significant changes in weather patterns.
