Seoul, August 20: The dynamics on the Korean Peninsula are shifting. While South Korea advocates for dialogue, North Korea remains steadfast in its aggressive stance. On Thursday, Pyongyang launched a missile towards the East Sea (Sea of Japan), with South Korean military officials claiming it has a range of 300 kilometers.
According to Yonhap, the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) confirmed the missile launch. Initially reported as an unidentified projectile, details about its travel distance were not disclosed.
This launch comes at a time of heightened military tensions in the region. North Korea had previously fired a short-range ballistic missile towards the east on August 12.
Additionally, Pyongyang has been vocally opposing the joint military exercises, known as “Ulchi Freedom Shield,” conducted by the United States and South Korea. North Korea views these drills as a threat to its security and a preparation for war.
Citing North Korea’s Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Yonhap reported that Kim Yo-jong, sister of Kim Jong-un, expressed skepticism regarding claims about the military exercises. She stated, “We are paying close attention to the ongoing joint military exercises between the U.S. and South Korea, which clearly indicate hostility towards North Korea.”
She emphasized that reducing the scope or duration of these military drills does not alter their provocative and aggressive nature. Furthermore, she noted that Pyongyang has “no interest whatsoever” in the actions taken by the U.S. and South Korea.
The missile launch on August 20 occurred just a day after the announcement of a reduction in joint military exercises by the U.S. and South Korea.
