Islamabad, August 20: Heavy rainfall in Swabi, located in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, has led to significant destruction. In the Swabi district, a house roof collapsed, and a bank building also fell down. Tragically, a man and his daughter lost their lives when they were trapped under the debris, while two other family members sustained serious injuries.
According to the major daily Dawn, Rescue 1122 officials reported that the incident occurred in the Azadkhel area of the Topi tehsil. Lukman Khan, a spokesperson for Rescue 1122 Swabi, stated that the family was asleep when the roof suddenly caved in.
Hearing the loud noise from the collapse, neighbors rushed to the scene and alerted rescue services. Local residents began efforts to rescue those trapped before the authorities arrived.
The deceased have been identified as 50-year-old Mohammad Fareeq and his 28-year-old daughter. Fareeq’s wife and son are reported to be in critical condition. The injured and the bodies of the deceased were transported to the tehsil headquarters hospital.
Rescue 1122 reported that the heavy rains have caused several buildings to collapse in Swabi. A bank building also fell, but there were no reported casualties from that incident. Additionally, two individuals were safely evacuated from the Zarandu canal area, and five people were rescued from the Azmabad checkpoint area.
Rescue officials indicated that over 300 people have been moved to safer locations due to sudden floods and landslides caused by the torrential rain.
The meteorological department has issued warnings for heavy rain and possible torrential downpours in several districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa until August 21. The affected areas include Dir, Chitral, Swat, Kohistan, Malakand, Nowshera, Charsadda, Swabi, Shangla, Battagram, Buner, Kohat, Hangu, Kurram, Bajaur, Mohmand, Khyber, Orakzai, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Peshawar, and Mardan.
The weather department has also warned of urban flooding risks in the low-lying areas of Swabi.
