
Rome, February 27: India and Italy engaged in crucial discussions on strategic defense priorities on Friday. A meeting took place between Sanjeev Kumar, Secretary of Defense Production, and General Luciano Portolano, Chief of the Italian Armed Forces. Both nations agreed to enhance industrial cooperation to deepen defense collaboration.
The Indian Embassy in Italy shared on social media platform X, stating, “Defense Production Secretary Sanjeev Kumar discussed strategic defense priorities with General Luciano Portolano. Both parties acknowledged the importance of advancing industrial cooperation to strengthen India-Italy defense collaboration.”
On Thursday, Kumar also met with Matteo Perego di Cremnago, Italy’s Under Secretary of State for Defense, and Admiral Giacinto Ottaviani, Director of National Armaments.
During the meeting, both sides agreed to leverage their complementary capabilities within their respective defense industrial frameworks to enhance cooperation.
The Ministry of Defense posted on social media platform X, “Strengthening India-Italy defense industrial cooperation. Defense Production Secretary Sanjeev Kumar met with Italian Defense Minister Matteo Perego di Cremnago and also engaged with Admiral Giacinto Ottaviani.”
The statement noted, “The discussions reviewed ongoing initiatives between India and Italy, industrial cooperation, and the policy frameworks guiding defense industry participation. Both sides agreed to further enhance collaboration by utilizing the complementary strengths of their respective defense industrial ecosystems.”
Kumar also addressed the India-Italy Defense Industry Seminar held in Rome. This seminar saw participation from defense public sector undertakings (PSUs), companies, and startups from both countries, organized by the Society of Indian Defense Manufacturers (SIDM) and the Italian Aerospace, Defense and Security Industries Federation (AIAD).
The Indian Embassy in Italy highlighted on social media platform X, “The India-Italy Defense Industry Seminar in Rome showcased strong participation from both countries’ defense PSUs, companies, and startups. The Defense Production Secretary and the National Armaments Director provided the background for discussions through their keynote speeches. B2B and B2G meetings offered excellent opportunities to explore industrial coordination and supply chain integration.”
Last December, Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Antonio Tajani met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to New Delhi. During the meeting, PM Modi described India-Italy relations as “continuously strengthening,” emphasizing that deepening cooperation is positively contributing not only to both nations but also to the global community.
