Hyderabad, June 10: A significant controversy has erupted regarding Congress leader Meenakshi Natarajan’s nomination for the Rajya Sabha from Madhya Pradesh. This issue is linked to a pending case in a Hyderabad court that was not disclosed in her affidavit.
Last year, a legal notice sent to the AICC in charge for Telangana from the state Congress office at Gandhi Bhavan revealed that Natarajan was named as a respondent in a private complaint filed by a former Congress leader and ex-corporator of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC).
This complaint was lodged in 2025 under Section 223 of the BNSSS in the court of the Fourth Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate in Hyderabad. Natarajan, listed as the fourth respondent, was instructed to appear in court on September 17, 2025, and to submit any responses if applicable.
The complainant, Shrilata, served as a corporator from 2002 to 2007 on a TDP ticket. She had filed a petition against Congress leader Shiv Kumar Reddy, alleging threats to her life from him and his supporters.
The complaint named Natarajan and six other Congress leaders as respondents. The argument presented was that these leaders were aware of the “harassment” and “threats” but failed to take any action.
Following the court’s directive, an FIR was registered on May 28, 2025.
Congress sources indicate that Natarajan’s name was not mentioned in the initial police complaint filed by Shrilata in 2022. This case was closed due to a lack of evidence. Subsequent private complaints in Hyderabad and Bengaluru were also dismissed.
The returning officer in Madhya Pradesh, who canceled Natarajan’s nomination, reportedly acted on a complaint from senior BJP leader Kailash Vijayvargiya, a minister in the Mohan Yadav government. The complaint alleged that Natarajan had failed to disclose a pending case in a Telangana court in her nomination papers.
Vijayvargiya’s statement sparked controversy, claiming he received “documents” from a Congress leader in Telangana.
BRS leader Krishank Manne questioned how the Madhya Pradesh BJP obtained this information and whether Telangana’s Home Minister had any involvement.
Manne further claimed that Natarajan had opposed the beautification project of the Musi River, the demolition of homes in Khammam, and the felling of trees at Hyderabad University.
