Ujjain, March 28: The renowned Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, witnessed a massive influx of devotees on the tenth day of the Shukla Paksha in Chaitra month. Pilgrims from across the country and abroad queued up late Friday night to have a glimpse of their beloved deity.
The temple complex was a sight to behold, filled with chants of “Har Har Mahadev” as devotees caught a glimpse of Baba. As usual, the Bhasma Aarti took place at 4 AM on Saturday.
This Saturday’s Bhasma Aarti was particularly special. After the ceremony, Baba Mahakal adorned the sacred ‘Om’ on his forehead, symbolizing peace and sending a message of tranquility to the world.
There are specific rituals associated with Mahakal’s Bhasma Aarti. According to tradition, the first ritual is the water abhishekam performed by the Mahanirvani Akhara during Brahma Muhurta, followed by a bath with Panchamrit. This Panchamrit consists of pure milk, fresh yogurt, ghee, sugar, honey, and various fruit juices. After the abhishekam, a grand Bhasma Aarti is conducted, where Baba is adorned with ashes, and devotees experience his divine presence.
Following the Aarti, Baba is specially adorned. The sacred ‘Om’ is placed on his forehead, and a beautiful silver tripund is added, enhancing his divine beauty. He is then decorated with floral garlands, bel leaves, sandalwood, and other puja materials.
Once the adornment is complete, devotees are blessed with a view of Baba’s magnificent form, considered his manifested presence. After this, a Kapoor Aarti is performed, followed by the offering of bhog.
