London, April 28: The United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office summoned the Iranian ambassador on Tuesday. This action was taken by Minister for Middle East Affairs, Hamish Faulkner, in response to comments made by the Iranian embassy on social media, which the UK deemed offensive and inflammatory.
Faulkner made it clear that such actions and statements are completely unacceptable. He emphasized that the embassy should avoid any remarks or posts that could be interpreted as inciting violence in the UK or other countries. This was stated by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.
The British government also reiterated that it will continuously monitor the activities of Iran’s strict and oppressive regime and hold it accountable for its wrongdoings. These include activities on British soil, attacks on its allied nations in the Gulf region, and violence against its own citizens.
The statement further highlighted that the safety of the country is the government’s top priority, and it will take all necessary measures to ensure the security of its citizens.
However, the minister did not specify which social media post from the embassy was objectionable.
Last month, the UK had also summoned the Iranian ambassador when two individuals were accused of assisting a foreign intelligence agency. In that case, an Iranian national and a British-Iranian dual citizen were charged under the National Security Act for allegedly aiding a foreign intelligence service.
The British government reiterated that national security is its utmost priority and that it takes any threats from Iran or those working for it very seriously.
The statement concluded that the government will continue to take all necessary steps to ensure the safety of the British people, including exposing Iran’s “dangerous and destabilizing” activities both domestically and internationally.
