Ujjain, April 8: A breathtaking sight unfolded at the renowned Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, on Wednesday morning. During the morning Bhasma Aarti, the deity was adorned in the divine form of Lord Ganesh.
Devotees from across the country and abroad queued up for hours in the temple premises to witness this special adornment. The temple resonated with chants of “Jai Shri Mahakal” as the faithful experienced this extraordinary sight on the sixth day of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Vaishakh.
In accordance with tradition, the temple doors were opened following the command of Lord Veerabhadra. The Mahanirvani Akhara performed the initial water offering to the deity, followed by a ceremonial bath with Panchamrit, a mixture of pure milk, fresh yogurt, ghee, sugar, honey, and various fruit juices. After the abhishekam, a grand Bhasma Aarti was conducted, where sacred ash was offered to the deity, allowing devotees to witness Mahakal in both formless and manifested forms.
This Aarti symbolizes renunciation and the truth of death. The ash used in the offering is specially prepared from the ashes of cow dung cakes, Palash, Banyan, Peepal, and Ber wood. Approximately two and a half kilograms of ash is offered to the Shivling during the Aarti, fulfilling the tradition of awakening Baba Mahakal.
On Wednesday, the deity was adorned with a special decoration, featuring a Vaishnav tilak and presented in the form of Lord Ganesh. Following this, the Kapoor Aarti was performed, and offerings were made.
Devotees relished the divine presence of Baba Mahakal during this sacred Aarti. The atmosphere was charged with chants of “Har Har Mahadev” and “Jai Shri Mahakal,” filling the entire temple complex with devotion.
