Ujjain, April 7: A massive crowd of devotees gathered at the world-renowned Jyotirlinga Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, on Tuesday. The traditional Bhasma Aarti, held early in the morning, featured a ceremonial water offering and special adornment for Lord Mahakal.
On the occasion of the fifth day of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Vaishakh, devotees were mesmerized by the divine and enchanting form of Baba. The temple resonated with chants of “Har Har Mahadev” and “Jai Mahakal.”
As per tradition, the temple doors were opened at Brahma Muhurta. The Bhasma Aarti is performed by the Mahanirvani Akhara. During this ritual, devotees are blessed with a vision of the formless Lord taking a tangible form. Following the Aarti, a water offering was made, accompanied by a Panchamrit puja and a special bathing ceremony with sacred ash.
Afterward, Lord Mahakal was beautifully adorned. His face, resembling a lotus, was exquisitely decorated. A clear tripundra was marked on his forehead, and the moon was elegantly placed atop. A new crown was adorned, and floral garlands were offered, enhancing the beauty of the decoration with fresh Bilva leaves and vibrant flowers.
The Bhasma Aarti holds significant religious importance. It involves the use of ashes from various trees such as Gohari, Peepal, Palash, Shami, and Bel. It is believed that during this time, Lord Mahakal is in his formless state. Therefore, women are not permitted to view the Aarti directly; they must cover their faces with a veil or dupatta.
This rule is strictly enforced at the temple. It is believed that the sight of Mahakaleshwar brings peace, happiness, and blessings to devotees, alleviating suffering and illness while dispelling the fear of untimely death.
