Seoul, July 1: South Korean President Lee Jae-myung has urged for unity within the ruling Democratic Party (DP) amid increasing factional tensions. This appeal was made during a meeting with former President Moon Jae-in, held ahead of the upcoming national convention.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the meeting took place at Cheong Wa Dae (the presidential office) during lunch, where both leaders discussed the growing competition for party leadership and internal divisions.
President Lee emphasized that the strength of the party and inclusive politics are essential for the nation. He stated, “Unity within the party is very important. The party must be strong from within.” He also mentioned that the party should expand its reach and promote “structural diversity.”
Lee highlighted that unity and diversity are two critical aspects that must be balanced. He noted that the Democratic Party has now become the leading political force in the country and should adopt a politics that represents all social classes.
Meanwhile, former President Moon Jae-in described party unity as the first step toward national unity. He stressed that progressive forces must come together to move forward. Moon asserted, “The Democratic Party must first unite.” He also indicated that President Lee is the person capable of achieving party unity, a broad progressive coalition, and national unity.
Reports suggest that the growing differences within the party are considered a reason for the recent decline in President Lee’s popularity, as indicated by recent public opinion polls. Some leaders have criticized his policies, claiming they diverge from traditional party stances.
The Democratic Party is set to hold its national convention in August, where competition for new leadership is expected.
Regarding North Korea policy, President Lee stated that he would continue the reconciliation-based approach of previous Democratic administrations. He emphasized that this is crucial for achieving lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula. Former President Moon also mentioned that opportunities for dialogue with North Korea can only be restored through patience and a stable security policy.
According to the presidential office, Lee has requested advice and a role from Moon in improving relations with North Korea, which Moon has accepted.
