Leftist Parties Decline Invitation from CM Vijay, Reaffirm Support for TVK Government

Chennai, July 1: Despite receiving an invitation, the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) will not attend the meeting and feast hosted by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, the founder of the Tamilga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), on Wednesday.

This decision reflects the stance of the leftist parties, which are providing external support to the TVK-led government but are not part of the ruling coalition.

Party leaders expressed that attending this event for government allies could imply a formal alliance with the ruling party.

CPI State Secretary M. Veerapandian stated, “This feast is for TVK’s allies. Since we are supporting the government from outside, we have decided not to participate. The leftist parties are not part of any coalition at this time, but our support for the government will continue.”

Since the formation of the TVK government, both CPI and CPI(M) have supported it on significant issues from the outside. They emphasize that this support is based on policies and public interest rather than a formal political agreement.

They clarified that their decision to abstain from the event should not be perceived as a disagreement with the government. Instead, both parties reiterated their commitment to collaborating with the government on issues concerning workers, farmers, and other vulnerable sections of society. They also made it clear that they would continue to raise public interest issues before the government when necessary.

Although they are staying away from the feast, leaders from CPI and CPI(M) are scheduled to meet with Chief Minister Vijay later in the day at the secretariat. They are likely to present a memorandum highlighting several critical issues related to workers and other social groups, demanding government intervention.

This development illustrates the leftist parties’ ongoing support for the TVK government while striving to maintain their political independence.

By avoiding the event for coalition allies and continuing discussions on policy issues with the Chief Minister, CPI and CPI(M) aim to clarify that their relationship with the government is one of external support rather than a formal alliance.
