New Delhi, July 1: A poignant and proud moment unfolded at the Guard of Honor ceremony for India’s new Army Chief, General Dheeraj Seth. After receiving the honor at the Ministry of Defence headquarters on Wednesday, General Seth saluted his father, retired Lieutenant General K.M. Seth. In a touching response, his father returned the salute.
Following this, General Seth touched the feet of his father and other family members present, seeking their blessings. This emotional scene captivated military officials, soldiers, and guests alike. General Seth’s younger brother, Rear Admiral Raveesh Seth, was also in attendance and saluted him during the ceremony.
The presence of this family, which has served in various branches of the Indian Armed Forces, added a special significance to the event. It showcased a unique blend of military tradition, familial values, and dedication to national service. General Dheeraj Seth has officially taken charge as the 31st Army Chief of India.
He expressed that leading the Indian Army is both a matter of pride and humility. Reaffirming his unwavering commitment to the principles of “duty, honor, and nation first,” he pledged to give his best for the nation’s security.
In tribute to the brave soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation, General Seth stated that their courage, dedication, and selfless service will continue to inspire future generations.
Before becoming the Army Chief, General Dheeraj Seth served as the Deputy Chief of Army Staff. He assumed his new role on June 30, 2026. Throughout his career, he has played significant roles in operations ranging from desert regions to counter-terrorism efforts in Jammu and Kashmir. The outgoing Army Chief, General Upendra Dwivedi, PVSM, AVSM, retired on Tuesday.
General Seth acknowledged the contributions of all former Army Chiefs, including General Upendra Dwivedi. He assured the citizens that the Indian Army is prepared to defend the country’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national interests under any circumstances. A former student of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, he was commissioned into the Indian Army’s Armored Corps in December 1986. Over his four-decade military career, he has gained extensive experience in operational, strategic, capability development, and institutional areas, significantly contributing to the Indian Army’s combat readiness and long-term transformation.
General Seth has commanded various significant military operations at different levels. His command assignments include an armored regiment in desert areas, an armored brigade on the western front, and a counter-terrorism force in Jammu and Kashmir. He also commanded the Sudarshan Chakra Corps while serving as a Lieutenant General.
Notably, the Sudarshan Chakra Corps is a major strike formation of the Indian Army. He has served as the General Officer Commanding of the Delhi area, overseeing critical national and international military operations and formal responsibilities during his tenure.
