Rajnath Singh Criticizes Congress for Opposition to Vande Mataram

New Delhi, August 21: Defense Minister Rajnath Singh has expressed that Congress’s formal opposition to honoring Vande Mataram is not only unfortunate but also a serious constitutional issue.

In a video message released on the social media platform X, Singh stated that according to the Constitution of India, Parliament is the supreme institution of the country, and any law passed by it is binding on all individuals.

He emphasized, “If someone refuses to accept this, their loyalty to the Constitution comes into question. Additionally, if someone denies respect to the national song, it raises doubts about their patriotism.”

The Congress party recently cited a resolution from 1937, deciding to sing only the first two stanzas of Vande Mataram. They argue that this decision was made with the consensus of prominent leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Rabindranath Tagore.

However, Singh countered that the resolution Congress refers to was passed under pressure from the Muslim League’s extremist demands, which ultimately led to the partition of the country.

He remarked that compromising with extremist elements has always proven detrimental to the nation. He warned that Congress’s current submission to such elements poses a serious threat to the country’s future.

Singh declared, “I believe Congress’s decision is entirely unconstitutional and condemnable, and it could lead to a significant political crisis in the future. By opposing Vande Mataram, Congress has revealed its reckless and dangerous intentions to the nation.”

Notably, during the recent monsoon session of Parliament, the National Pride Insult Prevention (Amendment) Bill, 2026, was passed. The opposition staged a strong protest and walked out of the house during this session. This bill aims to provide the national song Vande Mataram with legal status and protection similar to that of the national anthem, Jana Gana Mana. This means that any insult to Vande Mataram could lead to strict legal action against the offender. The bill has been approved by both houses of Parliament.
