New Delhi, September 12 (Daily Kiran) : The recent BRICS summit, held under India’s presidency, achieved a significant diplomatic milestone with all member nations agreeing on a joint declaration. Foreign affairs expert K.P. Fabian emphasized the importance of this consensus, especially given the ongoing tensions involving countries such as Iran, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia.
Fabian noted that the agreement is particularly noteworthy as it includes Iran, which faced attacks from Israel and the U.S. in February, along with additional sanctions. The participation of the UAE, which has also been targeted by Iranian aggression, adds further significance to the declaration.
The situation in Saudi Arabia was also highlighted, especially following an attack on oil facilities by Houthi rebels on the same day. An unknown resistance group in Iraq subsequently damaged a pipeline, prompting Iraq to urge Saudi Arabia against retaliation, a move that was accepted.
Additionally, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman had sought support from President Trump against the Houthi rebels, but Trump declined. This indicates a growing recognition among Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations of the need for dialogue and diplomacy, as Prime Minister Modi has previously stated.
Fabian pointed out that discussions among the GCC, Iran, and Iraq regarding arrangements for access to the Strait of Hormuz are indicative of active diplomacy. However, he raised questions about Trump’s intentions and whether he seeks further economic growth.
The expert further remarked on the uncertain future of the Iranian economy and the potential for further attacks, highlighting the GCC’s desire for peace and dialogue. He expressed skepticism about the BRICS declaration leading to solutions for the situation in West Asia, noting that meaningful resolution hinges on direct diplomatic engagement between the U.S. and Iran, primarily dependent on Trump’s decisions.
Regarding Ukraine, Fabian stated that the BRICS declaration is unlikely to bring about change, as a resolution will ultimately rely on agreements between President Trump and President Putin. He believes that once both leaders reach a consensus, Ukrainian President Zelensky will have to concede.
