Central Minister Demands Action Following Students Death in Guwahati

Guwahati, September 12 (Daily Kiran) : Central Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has called for urgent action following the tragic death of a 22-year-old student at the Lakshmi Bai National Institute of Physical Education (LNPE) in Guwahati. In a meeting with Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, Scindia pressed for the implementation of student demands in light of the incident.

Scindia has requested a compensation of 5 million rupees for the family of Shruti Upadhyay, a third-year B.P.Ed student and tennis player who passed away on September 8 at Nemcare Hospital. He also demanded a thorough investigation into allegations of medical negligence and administrative failures at the LNPE-Northeastern Regional Center (NERC).

The minister emphasized the need for appropriate action against the wardens involved, including potential suspension or termination if negligence is confirmed. This call for accountability arises from claims that Shruti was denied essential medical leave and treatment despite her complaints of severe abdominal pain.

Reports indicate that Shruti had been unwell for nearly a week before her death, having visited the institute’s health center for her condition. Fellow students allege that her symptoms were dismissed by medical staff, leading to a significant deterioration in her health before she was referred to the hospital.

In response to the outcry from students at both the Guwahati and Gwalior campuses, Scindia has reiterated the importance of student safety and welfare. He expressed his condolences to Shruti’s family and assured them that justice would be served. “If any negligence is found, there will be no leniency,” he stated, emphasizing the need for a fair resolution to the situation.

Scindia’s statements reflect a broader concern for student rights and safety within educational institutions, as he vowed to advocate for immediate and necessary actions to address the grievances raised.
