New Delhi, September 12 (Daily Kiran) : The United Nations has acknowledged the increasing global relevance of the BRICS group. Amid a shifting world order, the UN emphasizes the importance of platforms like BRICS in amplifying the voices of developing nations. On September 12, UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, highlighted the necessity of multilateral cooperation to address financial inequalities and shared challenges such as terrorism.
Dujarric stated that to protect the interests of the Global South, substantial reforms in international financial institutions are essential. He stressed the need for a fairer global trading system that does not favor specific groups of countries, ensuring equal opportunities for all.
The spokesperson reiterated Guterres’ support for deep multilateralism, urging nations to forge positive agreements through regional groups to alleviate tensions. He noted BRICS’ significant role, representing a large portion of the global population and GDP, and lauded India’s presidency for fostering connections and advancing reforms in international institutions.
Terrorism was described as a global threat that necessitates a united front from all nations. The UN has various agencies and programs in place to assist member states in combating this issue. Dujarric emphasized the importance of maintaining a consistent approach in the fight against terrorism, as its impact transcends borders.
In related comments, Meng Xianglin, editor of the International News Department of People’s Daily, referred to BRICS as a large family with 11 plus 10 members, noting that China will assume the presidency next. He reminisced about the successful New Delhi summit and acknowledged the dynamic and challenging times ahead.
Meng remarked on the complexities of the upcoming BRICS summit under China’s leadership, emphasizing the need for long-term thinking amid a rapidly changing environment. He stated that while the declaration is one aspect, actual decisions and their implementation represent another challenge.
Additionally, retired Wing Commander Praful Bakshi commended Prime Minister Modi’s statement at the summit regarding UN representation. Modi stressed the importance of reaching out to the smallest nations and ensuring broad participation in UN programs. Bakshi acknowledged that achieving these goals would require extensive discussions and deliberations, indicating that reforming the UN is a monumental task.
On Modi’s call to secure maritime routes and maintain open supply chains, Bakshi highlighted the significance of maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz and Bab-el-Mandeb, which together account for 25 to 30 percent of global oil and 60 percent of international trade. He asserted that the economies of Southeast Asia and the Asia-Pacific region depend on maintaining connections with Western nations for trade to flourish.
