New Delhi, September 12 (Daily Kiran) : The Delhi government’s Goods and Services Tax (GST) department, in collaboration with railway officials, has seized goods valued at approximately ₹5 crore at the Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station. The confiscated items include around 25 tons of copper scrap among nearly 50 tons of goods being transported without essential documentation.
According to the Delhi government, the GST department received a tip-off indicating that certain goods were being sent via railway without necessary documents such as invoices and e-way bills. Acting on this information, the department launched a special operation with railway officials.
Reports indicate that the shipment originated from Renigunta in Andhra Pradesh and arrived at Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station. During the inspection, officials recovered about 25 tons of copper scrap, estimated to be worth around ₹3 crore.
Additionally, the authorities found approximately 25 tons of mixed scrap, textiles, and other items, valued at about ₹2 crore. The total value of the seized goods is estimated to be around ₹5 crore.
The GST department stated that the seized goods lacked the required invoices and e-way bills. The department is currently conducting a thorough verification of the goods and associated documents. It is also investigating compliance with legal requirements regarding the transportation of goods under GST laws.
Officials from the department noted that this action is a significant step toward strengthening the monitoring of goods transported via both road and railway networks. Enhanced surveillance on railway routes, along with improved coordination with railway officials, is aimed at identifying unaccounted goods, discrepancies in documentation, and potential tax evasion cases.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta emphasized that her government will not tolerate tax evasion or revenue loss under any circumstances. The government’s goal is not only to take action but also to develop an effective system that ensures businesses operate with complete transparency and pay their due taxes.
The Chief Minister stated that monitoring will be intensified across all modes of transport, including railways, to reinforce GST compliance. Good governance, transparency, and safeguarding government revenue are top priorities for the Delhi government, and strict legal action against those involved in tax evasion will continue.
